You can be surprised all you want, Jeff Caplan, but life has a way of working out how it wants to.

My ex has a very close — almost too close — relationship with his family. Everyone’s in each other’s business. This is good and bad. There were many bitter fights over getting him the help he needed. Finally, it worked. I can’t remember why it finally did.

Perhaps I got to the point that I was simply tired of arguing. And I also hoped things would work out on their own. There’s a certain helplessness that occurs when you’re dealing with a partner who has major issues. Alas, good luck with your perfect marriage/life, Jeff Caplan. There was a time when I believed that mine would work out perfectly as well.

Then life happened, and I was humbled. I allowed myself to become humbled by my difficulties instead of embittered by them. Shit happens. It happens to all of us. Then we need to adjust and make the best of our imperfect situations.

And I do agree that another article is needed to explain WHY it took so long for my ex to get the help he needed. However, I try to answer only one question at a time in each Medium piece. But thanks for yet another idea….

I write about relationships, women’s issues, and my highly imperfect life. Learn more about me: Support:
